Our Mission
The mission of the Humane Society of Jefferson County is to care for the lost, homeless and abused animals of Jefferson County, help place them in forever homes, and work to inspire kinder and more humane communities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is your shelter a "no kill" shelter?
The Humane Society of Jefferson County is best described as an "open admission" shelter. We take in all animals regardless of factors affecting adoptability including age, health and temperament. We never turn away a stray animal from a contracted municipality.
How long do you keep animals before you euthanize them?
There is no time limit or "ticking clock" for any of our animals. As long as an animal is happy and healthy and we have space, the animal will stay until it finds a home. We have not had space-related euthanasia for several years.
Since you are called the Humane Society of Jefferson County, do you receive funding from the county or any other government agency?
No. The shelter receives no county or other government funding. We are a private, non-profit organization funded by our contracts with individual municipalities for stray animal pick-up, donations, bequests and fundraising events.
How do I begin the adoption process?
Visit the shelter or our Petfinder.com site to see our available pets and fill out an application. The adoption process takes about 24-48 hours if information on the application is complete and your veterinarian or landlord can be contacted.
Are all of your pets spayed and neutered before adoption?
Yes. In 2005 we made the financial commitment to spay and neuter each pet before adoption.
Do you need volunteers?
Yes! The shelter has many opportunities to volunteer both in the shelter and at outside events. Please visit the "Volunteer" section on this website for more information.
Do you have a no cost or low cost spay/neuter program?
At the present time, we do not have the resources to spay/neuter any owned pets. We perform surgery here only on HSJC animals with the assistance of a mobile veterinarian.
Do you adopt to people out of your county and/or state?
As long as we are able to verify all the necessary information from your application, we will adopt animals to individuals who live in other counties or states.
